New cases – Failure of a Member state to fulfil obligations

Despite improving in recent years, Greece has had more cases than any other with the Court over the last five years; specifically, 24 cases, with 18 opened between 2014 and 2016. Spain is next, with 22 new cases, then Germany and Italy (both with 18 new cases), Poland (17), Austria (15) and Belgium (14). Between 2014 and 2019, the total number of new cases which reached the Court was 258.

The European court of justice may impose financial sanctions against Member states when failing to fulfill specific obligations.
